The Best Laid Plans...

Not flying south THIS year...
Well, so much for my Polar Plans for this year...  The night before I was supposed to leave for Antarctica, I ended up in the hospital ER with terrible chest pains. After two days of nonstop tests - and canceling my trip on doctor's orders - I was given a clean bill of health and sent home, with no idea what caused my symptoms. Weird - and disappointing. But better to be home than having heart problems on a ship in the far reaches of the Southern Ocean.

There are plenty of things I'm sorry to be missing on this trip, not the least of which was the chance to do a penguin blog for my grand-daughter's first grade class. The kids were full of questions and enthusiasm ; I really hate to be letting them down.

So now I have to look at my schedule and decide how best to use this sudden change. Stay tuned...

  1. Wow! Sorry to hear about your health problem, but glad that it resolved itself. I required a minor surgery this summer that came out of nowhere. Fortunately, it happened at the start of 4 weeks home, rather than right before a trip, plus I healed up very quickly. Rest up & get healthy.

  2. Thanks Jon. Talk about terrible timing! The truth is, I feel totally fine now and only wish I had a Star Trek transporter to get me on the ship which, even now, is just leaving from Ushuaia, heading South. It's a pity, but I'm healthy, and I'll get other chances. Hope your medical issues are resolved. Take care, K.

  3. Nice to know that u r fine now, take care.
I have also just recovered from a horrible accident 5 months back. what a terrible feeling it is to be grounded, shot insects in the backyard for 3 months :)
If only we could concentrate on building a star trek transporter, and stop working on destroying the planet, the world would be a better place to live in.
It might cause a few problems as well, so if u get it keep it a secret

  4. Thanks for your good wishes. It is easy to take our health for granted and not realize what a gift it is. I hope your recovery has been complete and that you can move beyond your backyard!

  5. Glad to hear you're ok!

Ooh, so sorry you missed your trip. That's somewhere I would love to go one day. Better safe than sorry though.

I am also working on that Star Trek thing, being on crutches since mid July with a torn kneecap! It's amazing how creative you can get when you have to though, it's made me think outside the box a little.

I'm glad I decided to check out your own site and found your blog, too. I enjoy your articles on Outdoor Photographer.

  6. Chandira - Isn't it amazing that everyone who has kindly responded has been facing medical issues of their own! Yikes, are we all falling apart?? Anyhow, good luck with your knee - I'm sure you'll be thrilled to be entirely mobile again. Thanks for your nice comments...

  7. Yes, when your health is in question in some way, you start appreciating it, that's the gift of these times, I think. You start to feel some compassion!

I got to spend this weekend on San Juan Island, and got some great fox shots, it was wonderful to be up there again! Not as far as the antarctic, but it's a start. :-)
